Having worked as a structural marine engineer for two years, JF coordinated closely with environmental engineers to meet environmental state, federal and international regulations in his construction projects. Through this process and his fascination for the local, national and international work conducted by WCS, JF's ideas for the circumnavigation project matured.

JF started sailing when he was 7 years old. He has experience with various sailing craft, from 30 mph-three-wheeled-beach-sailers to 50-foot racing yachts, and has actively raced catamarans and single-hulls in buoy and ocean races in Germany and the United States, including the prestigious Newport to Bermuda Ocean Race. JF has participated in numerous coastal and ocean yacht deliveries and has managed various "emergencies-at-sea," including man-overboards and dangerous offshore injuries. JF's sailing record is bolstered by internationally recognized sailing certifications, including the United States Power Squadrons and U.S. Sailing certifications.

JF graduated from Cornell University with a B.S. in structural engineering and gained professional experience in marine construction while working in New York City with a distinguished U.S. design firm. In that time he acted as the Assistant Design Engineer on harbor and docking facilities and as the Assistant Project Manager on the Manhattan FDR Drive and Lincoln Tunnel vent shaft rehabilitations. JF's technical experience also includes Internet-site and computer programming. JF has worked as a scientific research diver in the Caribbean and managed several commercial dive teams in New York City. He has also written numerous reports on marine ecology for the Turks and Caicos Fisheries and the New York City Department of Transportation. JF's field experience also comprises of volunteer work in Ecuador, where he taught local farming families how to produce and use organic fertilizers. There he also taught Colgate sponsored oral hygiene classes to children. JF speaks English and German fluently, and has an advanced knowledge of Spanish.
