Abrolhos Under Water
|
SCUBA (Self Contained Underwater Breathing Apparatus) equipment litters the cockpit of our Wildlife catamaran. We are getting ready to dive. 1 hour underwater in Abrolhos is a magical experience. We logged 3 dives and explored Abrolhos's various underwater terrains.

As Co-Captains JF and Florian submerge beneath the waves, crew member Sebastian is filming their descent. The camera is in a watertight container. The water was 25 Degrees Celsius (77 Degrees Fahrenheit), cold enough for neoprene wetsuits that keep us warm when we are underwater.
Corals:
Abrolhos is famous for its large mushroom shaped coral domes that have grown over 30 meters (90 feet) in height. They are ancient, as coral grows less than 1mm (1/16 inch) per year.

Groupers:
Here we encountered a large 120 pound (40 kg) fish, named a Black Grouper (Mycteroperca bondaci).
I got Goosebumps diving next to this large fish. 2 of them followed us for 30 minutes, gazing at us with their large eyes.
Groupers eats primarily on other fish. It's got a big mouth with many teeth. It is not dangerous to humans at all, however.

The Black Grouper, our new friend in Abrolhos. Black Groupers live primarily near coral reefs and other hard bottom habitats at 33-100 feet (10-30 meter) depths.
